STEAM Museum Education Programs Intern

The Leonardo seeks a STEAM Museum Education Programs Intern to join our team and mission to fuse science, technology, and art in experiences that inspire creativity and innovation in people of all ages and backgrounds.

OVERVIEW:

The STEAM Intern will spend 10 hours per week helping to run STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs for museum guests, which may include Girls Who Code, Little Leos, Coding Bootcamp, or Tech Take Apart, depending on each intern’s area of expertise.

  • Hours: One weekday during museum hours for 4 to 5 hours and one weekend day for 4 to 5 hours (8-10 hours per week)
  • Pay Rate: This unpaid internship is an education or training program designed to provide you with educational and practical experience, and is purely academic and for your express educational benefit only. You will not receive any financial benefit or compensation and you are not entitled to a job at the end of this unpaid internship.
  • Stipend: You will be eligible for a stipend of $2,000, paid $333 bi-weekly on Fridays. This stipend is to support your expenses during the internship period (e.g., meals, housing, commute)
  • Length of Internship: 12 weeks, including 1 week of training (option to extend internship depending on funding)
  • Reports to: Floor Education Manager

This internship is funded through a grant provided by NASA. As part of the internship, each intern will complete a project over the course of 12 weeks that can be implemented into regular museum programming, such as designing and implementing a STEAM-based weekly program or expanding a floor activation program into the museum for guests to enjoy.

WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Ensuring an excellent, educational experience for participating museum guests
  • Design & implement a 12-week project according to provided specifications
  • Assisting the STEAM Education Specialists and CRAFT manager in leading thrilling, interactive curriculum on STEAM programs
  • Preparing materials and ensuring programs are ready to run
  • Leading small groups and interacting one-on-one during programs
  • Ensuring participants are safe and constantly supervised
  • Providing other assistance as needed

 

WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED:

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in a STEAM field
  • Ability to engage with groups of youth and facilitate positive experiences
  • Ability to manage and inspire groups of youth and museum patrons
  • Ability to stand for up to four hours at a time and lift at least 25 lbs
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Ability to be patient, understand, and helpful with museum guests
  • Ability to be self-directed, take initiative, and problem solver
